Segment 04
Magnesium hydroxide as a halogen free flame retardant
Halogen-free magnesium hydroxide flame retardant, and high-surface-area magnesium oxide as a precursor.
For halogen free flame retardancy, particle size and surface area decide whether the compound survives the loading it needs. Our magnesium hydroxide is specified for the thermal and physical demands of high-temperature compounding, verified per lot, and documented for your process. The whole case rests on one property: how much heat it survives before it decomposes.
Compounders precipitating their own magnesium hydroxide can buy the high-surface-area oxide precursor from the same US stock, with the same lot documentation.
Grades for this segment
-
Pharmaceutical and supplement grade magnesium hydroxide for ingredient use and halogen-free flame retardancy.
-
Our highest-surface-area magnesia, for systems where reaction speed is the specification.
-
Low-iron technical magnesia for rubber, paper, fuel and drilling systems.
What decides fit
The technical picture
-
The decomposition window is the specification
It decomposes endothermically, absorbing heat and releasing water vapour. Thermally stable to around 340 degrees Celsius, high enough for polyolefins. Aluminium trihydroxide decomposes well below that.
-
Loading level, and why particle engineering decides it
At high loading the filler dominates mechanical behaviour. Particle size, shape and surface treatment decide whether you keep elongation and impact resistance.
-
Surface treatment
Untreated, it is hydrophilic and disperses poorly into a non-polar polymer. Stearate and silane treatments fix that. Tell us your polymer system.
-
Smoke and corrosion behaviour
Water vapour rather than corrosive halogen gases. For cable and enclosed spaces, that drives the specification on its own.
Supply
Stocked in the US, verified in the US, documented by MagVanta.
Every grade listed on this page is held in US inventory, verified lot by lot through independent US laboratory testing, and shipped with a MagVanta certificate of analysis, technical data sheet and safety data sheet. You buy from a US company, under US law, at a delivered US price that holds.
